New PA Congressional District Map Progresses, But Federal Judges Are Set To Hear Appeal Case

February 26, 2018

A panel of federal judges has set the date of March 9 for a hearing on appeals from Pennsylvania Republicans to throw out a new Congressional district map for the state drawn up by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

This announcement was made after the panel turned down an immediate stay to the implementation of the new map.  Meanwhile, Tuesday is the first day on which potential candidates will be allowed to begin collecting signatures to gain entry to the May primary ballot.

The plaintiffs in the suit want the federal courts to require the use of the 2011 district map for this year’s elections, and there has already been a request for a stay of the new map awaiting the United States Supreme Court.

The decision to strike down the 2011 map was made by the Democratic-leaning state Supreme Court, who saw it as Republican gerrymandering.  The GOP now believes the new map unfairly favors the Democrats.
