New Jersey Couple Jailed In Clarion After Children Were Found In The Back Of A Freezing Box Truck

Officials in Clarion County have jailed a New Jersey couple after they say three young children were found riding in the back of an unheated box truck among several pieces of unsecured furniture and other items.

State Police troopers say the temperature was ten degrees when they stopped Jose and Ramona Padillo, from Woodbridge, New Jersey, along the westbound lanes of Interstate 80 in Clarion Township on New Year’s Day.  Troopers say three young girls – ages 8, 10 and 12 – were riding on a couch in the back of the Padillos’ truck.

Police did say the girls were wearing coats and had a blanket over them.  Their parents told troopers the family was headed to Ohio.

Charges include three counts apiece of endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment.  Jose Padillo also faces a number of traffic violation charges.

While the children were admitted into protective custody, their parents were lodged on $10,000 bail apiece in the Clarion County Jail.
