Authorities say the search for a missing man who once played for the Pittsburgh Steelers ended at about 10:00 AM Wednesday morning when the man was found alive in a wooded area near Harrisville in northern Butler County.
Police officials say 84 year-old Raymond Mathews had last been seen walking along a road near his home in Marion Township around 2:00 PM Tuesday. Family members were concerned since they say Mathews suffers from severe dementia.
After being located by searchers aided by a canine unit, Mathews was transported to the highway on an all-terrain vehicle, and was taken by ambulance to Grove City Medical Center.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ website says Ray Mathews played for the Steelers from 1951 through 1959. Other sources indicate he played in 108 games, caught 34 touchdown passes and ran for five additional scores. He was twice named to the NFL Pro Bowl team.
