Phil Mickelson birdied four of the final six holes on Sunday to win the British Open for the first time.
Mickelson’s final round 5-under-par 66 was his lowest score in the last round of 80 Majors appearances, and the lowest Sunday score at the British Open since 2000. It was his fifth Major win overall, and only Tiger Woods (with 6) has won more Majors since 2004.
Playing at Muirfield in Gullane, Scotland, Mickelson finished at 3-under-par 281 as the only golfer below par. Henrik Stenson closed at even par. Lee Westwood, Adam Scott and Ian Poulter tied for third place at one-over par. Woods, Zach Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama tied at two-over.
In addition to the traditional Claret Jug prize, Mickelson won the equivalent of $1,442,826.
