A Mercer woman has been charged with vehicular homicide in the death of a former Lawrence County fire chief whose motorcycle was struck by a car.

The incident occurred May 7 in Scott Township, the hometown of the accident victim, Daniel Gallatin.

Accident investigators claim 42 year-old Laura Gargiulo was texting when her car slammed into Gallatin’s motorcycle.  Gallatin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gargiulo has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter, careless driving, reckless driving, aggravated assault by vehicle, and violations of the state’s texting-while-driving and property damage laws.  She was lodged in the Lawrence County Jail with bail set at $50,000 and a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday.
