Mercer County Mini-Casino Deal Invalidated

February 22, 2018
By

A winning bid of nearly $9.9 million announced Wednesday for a mini-casino to be built near Greenville in Mercer County was invalidated nearly immediately by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

Board officials say the buffer radius in the bid submitted by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation for the fourth of ten new mini-casinos allowed under Pennsylvania’s recent gambling expansion legislation overlaps the zone already approved for Mount Airy Casino for a facility planned for neighboring Lawrence County.

The Gaming Control Board planned to meet Thursday to consider whether to accept the only other bid for mini-casino number four, submitted by a London businessman whose firm runs Parx Casino in Philadelphia.

In addition to the mini-casino granted to the Lawrence County bid – probably to be constructed in New Castle – bids have been approved for new gambling facilities in the York area and in Westmoreland County just southeast of Pittsburgh.
