Mars Man Charged In Oil City In Alleged Failure To Submit Fundraiser Money

A Butler County man was charged in Oil City on Wednesday after he was accused of failing to submit the promised money from a fundraiser to the city.

The money was targeted for training and equipment for the Oil City Police Department.

33 year-old Thomas Burke, from Mars, is free on bail after having been charged with theft by failure to make the required disposition of funds received, and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Venango County Central Court next Wednesday.

Burke has been identified as the operator of the firm which has coordinated Officers Down fundraisers such as 5-kilometer races.  One such event was held in Oil City last year.

City officials say they were promised twenty percent of the proceeds from the Oil City race, which totaled more than $2,300, and have received one check for $250.

Burke’s firm is also accused by event vendors that he has not paid them.

News of the charges which Burke is facing have also prompted accusations against him from other police departments and fundraiser vendors from as far away as Minnesota and Vermont.
