The state’s Agriculture Secretary kicked off Maple Month in Pennsylvania in the Meadville area on Friday.
Secretary George Greig, from nearby Linesville, joined Crawford County maple producers in tapping a sugar maple tree before delivering a proclamation from Governor Tom Corbett announcing Maple Month.
The state Agriculture Department says Pennsylvania’s 96,000 gallons of maple syrup production in 2012 ranked the Commonwealth fifth among maple-producing states. It is estimated there were 501,000 maple tree taps in Pennsylvania last year.
