A state House committee has approved a bill that would require public school districts in Pennsylvanian to post the motto, “In God We Trust,” in every school building.

The House Education Committee forwarded the measure to the full House with a 14-to-9 vote.

The bill was sponsored by Republican Representative Rick Saccone, from Allegheny County, who calls it the National Motto Display Act.  Saccone predicted that the media would “beat down” the idea, but that it would be overwhelmingly accepted by the Legislature.  And, he ventured that constituents would favor the act “500-to-1.”

A one-time Pennsylvania Governor is credited with having the motto engraved on the country’s coins while he served as director of the federal mint in the 1800′s.
