Lawmakers, Police Want To Continue State’s Vehicle Registration Stickers

February 16, 2016

Even as PennDOT has announced that the last of Pennsylvania’s motor vehicle registration stickers will be issued this December 30, a group of lawmakers and law enforcement officials are pressing to continue them.

PennDOT last week unveiled the Automated License Plate Reader which they say will be the new tool for police officials to check the active status of license plates and verify their authenticity and whether they are attached to the proper vehicles.  It is expected that the device will render the traditional registration stickers obsolete, and according to PennDOT would save the state money..

But, a bill introduced to continue issuing the stickers has passed the House of Representatives, and has been sent to the state Senate.  Some legislators are concerned that law officers may not know that a vehicle is unregistered, and that they may then miss other violations, such as an uninsured vehicle or even criminal activities.
