Justin Rose fashioned an even-par 70 in the closing round of the U.S. Open at the Merion Golf Club’s East Course in Ardmore on Sunday, and then watched as Phil Mickelson parred the 71st hole and bogeyed the 72nd, taking his first major golf championship while Mickelson settled for his record sixth second-place finish at the national championship.

Rose won $1.44 million in a tourney in which no one finished below, or at even par.  He finished at one-over, while Mickelson and Jason Day tied for second place at plus-3.  Jason Dufner recorded a 67 on Sunday to tie for fourth place at plus-five with two-time winner Ernie Els, Billy Horschel and Hunter Mahan.
