Jussi Jokinen recorded his first career hat trick on Tuesday night, leading the Pittsburgh Penguins to their third consecutive victory, a 5-2 home win over the Carolina Hurricanes.
Pittsburgh has started the season at 3-0 for the first time since 1994, when they opened up with seven straight victories. They have outscored their three opponents 12-3.
Jokinen opened the game’s scoring, broke a 2-2 tie with his second goal early in the final period and added a power play goal with 6:57 remaining in the game. Paul Martin and Tanner Glass also scored for Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury (3-0) earned his third straight win in goal. Fleury made 32 saves, and has stopped 79 of the 82 shots he has faced this season.
Scorers for Carolina (1-1-1) were Eric Staal and Nathan Gerbe. Cam Ward took the loss.
