For the second consecutive game on Wednesday night, Jussi Jokinen scored the only goal in a game’s shootout, and the Pittsburgh Penguins (51-24-5) posted a 4-3 home win over Detroit at Consol Energy Center.
Jokinen also scored during regulation play, and teammate James Neal tallied a pair of goals. Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang returned to the ice after having missed ten weeks of action following a stroke. Letang contributed an assist to Jokinen’s third-period score.
With the aid of the point they received for forcing overtime, Detroit (38-27-15) officially qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs which begin next week. Tomas Jurco, Jakub Kindl and Riley Sheahan scored for the Red Wings.
The Penguins’ Marc-Andre Fleury (39-18-4) stopped 34 shots for his 39th win of the season. Jonas Gustavsson (16-5-4) took the loss.
Pittsburgh will close the regular season with home games Saturday (3:00 PM) against Philadelphia and Sunday (7:30 PM) against Washington. Radio pregame airtimes on 96.3 KQW will be 2:30 PM on Saturday and 7:00 PM on Sunday.
