Five-time series winner Jimmie Johnson took over the lead in the NASCAR Chase for the Sprint Cup standings with a clear victory Sunday in the AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.

Tied atop the points standings with Matt Kenseth prior to the race, Johnson led for 255 of 334 laps, and won for the third time at Texas by some four seconds over Dale Earnhardt, Jr.  With only two events remaining, his points lead over Kenseth is at seven, exactly the margin of his lead after last year’s victory at Texas, coming before he lost the Cup to Brad Keselowski.

Joey Logano placed third Sunday, ahead of Kenseth and Kasey Kahne.

The penultimate race in the Chase series will be the Advocare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway next Sunday afternoon (Nov. 10).
