Former Penn State assistant football coach Jay Paterno announced Friday he is withdrawing from the race for Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor.

The announcement came following reports that an opponent was challenging Paterno’s nominating petitions.  Paterno’s announcement cited the potential length of the challenge process, and stated that Paterno did not wish to become a distraction to the primary election itself.

Paterno’s withdrawal leaves the list of candidates on the Democratic ticket for Lieutenant Governor in the May 20th primary at five — Harrisburg City Councilman Brad Koplinski – who was filing the challenge to Paterno, former Congressman Mark Critz, state Senator Mike Stack, state Representative Brandon Neuman and Bradford County Commissioner Mark Smith.
