City Of Erie Tops Wintertime Snowfall Average; New Winter Storm Watch Begins Friday

December 28, 2017

PennDOT says the speed limit on the Interstate highways in snowbound Erie County has been restored.

During the storms which dumped more than five feet of snow on Erie, beginning on Christmas Day, the speed limit on Interstates 79, 90 and 86 in Erie County had been reduced to 45 miles per hour.

PennDOT officials say roadway clearance continues in the storm area.

As Thursday dawned, the city of Erie had already reached 102.1 inches of snow this winter, topping its average snowfall total for a full winter of 100.9 inches.

So, what’s next for the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania?  Well, the National Weather Service has posted a Winter Storm Watch for Erie and Crawford Counties as well as Ashtabula County in Ohio, to be effective from 7:00 AM Friday until 7:00 PM Saturday.  The NWS says some parts of Erie County could see another sixteen inches of snow accumulation by Saturday evening.
