After much debate Tuesday, the state House of Representatives rejected a proposal to give school districts the power to replace property taxes with other funding sources.

The proposed amendment was rejected on a 138-59 vote.

It was proposed to a bill that advocates a more guarded, voter-approved process to shift the tax burden away from property owners.

The amendment could have led to the replacement of property taxes with higher sales and income taxes.
