On a day in which it seemed that no one atop the leaderboard wanted to win, Russell Henley birdied the first playoff hole and captured the Honda Classic at the PGA National Resort and Spa’s Champion Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
In the process, Henley outlasted third-round leader Rory McIlroy, who both bogeyed and double-bogeyed down the stretch, as well as Ryan Palmer and Russell Knox. The four golfers had tied through regulation at 8-under-par 272. Billy Hurley III closed at -7.
McIlroy finished with a final round 4-over-par 74. Of the golfers in the playoff, only Palmer (69) played Sunday’s round below par.
Henley won $1.080 million.
