Federal officials say the number of Pennsylvania residents signing up for insurance under the new federal health care law nearly doubled in March.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, in a report released late last week containing updated numbers through the end of March for people who would finish their enrollment process in April, said the number of sign-ups in Pennsylvania rocketed from just under 160,000 by the end of February to about 318,000 by March 31.

The agency says that figure would translate to about one in five of the Pennsylvania residents who had been estimated to be uninsured.
