Safety officials say one of many calls to which emergency crews responded during icy conditions on Sunday night was an incident involving a trio of jack-knifed tractor-trailers on Interstate 80 near Emlenton.

Sources say the series of incidents occurred during a freezing drizzle around 10:30 PM Sunday, and climaxed with the spillage of dozens of batteries that were being hauled by the third jack-knifed rig which hit a passing truck as it swerved across the highway.

Hazmat crews were called and I-80 was closed in both directions for several hours, causing traffic to be detoured as far as seven miles behind the scene.  Officials determined that the actual leakage of sulfuric acid from the batteries was minimal, but total cleanup time was extensive.

No injuries were reported throughout the series of incidents.
