Denny Hamlin is being treated at a California hospital for a compression fracture in his lower spine following a crash on the last lap of NASCAR’s Auto Club 400 run Sunday at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California in Fontana, California.

Joey Logano’s car slammed into Hamlin’s vehicle, sending Hamlin into the inside wall.  Hamlin was airlifted from the scene.  Logano went on to finish third in the race behind winner Kyle Busch and runner-up Dale Earnhardt, Jr.

Hamlin may be sidelined for six weeks or longer, but his stay in a California medical facility was not expected to be lengthy.  Hamlin’s team said they expected Logano to be fined for the crash.  Meanwhile, driver Tony Stewart was involved in a shoving match with Logano following Sunday’s race.

Earnhardt’s second-place finish pushed “Junior” into first place in the NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings.  Hamlin officially finished 25th, and stands at number-10 in the points race.
