Governor Wolf Signs Gambling Expansion Package

October 31, 2017

As part of a process to find money to fund a $2.2 billion dollar deficit in Pennsylvania’s budget now four months into the state’s fiscal year, Governor Tom Wolf on Monday signed a package that dramatically expands gambling in the state.

Pennsylvania will become just the fourth state to allow online gambling.  A maximum of ten “mini-casinos” may be built by existing casino owners.  Gambling will also be allowed in truck stops and at eight Pennsylvania airports.

Online gambling will include games both from casinos and the Pennsylvania Lottery.

Meanwhile, the Governor continues his push for a severance tax on Marcellus shale natural gas drilling.  Wolf said Monday creative budgeting in Harrisburg needs to now give way to a search for more sources of recurring revenue, such as a severance tax.
