Thomas Mueller scored the lone goal of the game in the 55th minute on Thursday, and Germany (2-0-1) captured first place in Group G in the World Cup soccer tournament with a 1-0 victory over the United States, but even with the loss, the Americans advanced to the round of sixteen and elimination play by winning a second-place tiebreaker with Portugal.

The Portuguese defeated Ghana to tie the U.S. for second place at 1-1-1 in pool play.

The U.S. will face next Belgium (3-0), the Group H winner, at 4:00 EDT on Tuesday in Salvador, Brazil.  The Belgians blanked South Korea 1-0 on Thursday, finishing pool play as one of only four of the original 32 teams to start 3-0.
