Evan Gattis broke a 4-4 tie with a pinch-hit, two-run home run in the eighth inning off Pittsburgh’s Jared Hughes (1-1) on Thursday night, lifting the Atlanta Braves to a 6-4 victory over the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

Brothers B.J. and Justin Upton both homered in the same game for Atlanta for the second time this season, and the Braves (13-2) won for the 11th time in their last 12 games.  Chris Johnson also homered for the Braves.  Anthony Vavaro (1-0) earned the win.

The Pirates (7-8) had Russell Martin and Pedro Alvarez both hit their first homers of the season.  The Alvarez shot measured an estimated 448 feet.  Alvarez had entered the game batting .089, and Martin had been hitting at a .103 clip.

Also for Pittsburgh, Travis Snider went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Garrett Jones drove home two runs.

The Pirates will welcome back from the injured list Wandy Rodriguez (1-0; 1.00 ERA) for the second game of a scheduled four-game series on Friday night.  Atlanta is scheduled to start Tim Hudson (2-0; 2.50 ERA).  The contest is set to start at 7:05 PM.
