Gaby Sanchez slammed three hits, including a home run and a double, and drove home two runs on Tuesday afternoon as the Pittsburgh Pirates routed World Baseball Classic entry Team Spain 10-0 at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida.
Darren Ford and Anderson Hernandez also recorded two hits for the Bucs, who fielded a team comprised mostly of players who are not expected to make their regular season roster. One of Hernandez’s hits was a home run. 2011 first-round draft choice Gerritt Cole threw three innings as the Pittsburgh starter, allowing just two hits, striking out six batters and walking just one.
Only two of the players on Spain’s roster are major leaguers. Their starting pitcher was Houston Astros reliever Rhiner Cruz. Barbaro Canizares, who has played in five Major League games for Atlanta, started at first base.
The Bucs will return to Grapefruit League play on Wednesday afternoon, hosting the Boston Red Sox.
