Franklin High School’s head football coach Dave Smith submitted his resignation on Wednesday, two days after the Franklin Area School Board decided to open up the position.

Smith, an FHS graduate who was an all-conference defensive end at Edinboro University, was hired in 2004.  Over nine seasons, his teams compiled a combined 31-59 record.  His best years were in 2004 and 2006 when he led Franklin Knights teams to 6-4 marks.  In the last four seasons, the Knights have won a total of just five games, including only one this season.  The 2011 team was 0-10.

There was no immediate word as to how soon the coaching job search at Franklin would begin.
