Franklin Moves To Winners’ Bracket Final At State Jr. League Tourney In Cranberry With 4-3 Win Over KAU

The Franklin Junior League All-Stars managed just four hits in a second-round game at the Pennsylvania Junior League Baseball State Tournament in Cranberry on Friday, but squeezed them all into a four-run fourth inning in a 4-3 victory over Kennett Square KAU.

The victory puts Franklin, the District 25 and Section 1 champions, into the winners’ bracket final of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament where they will face Section 5 champion Back Mountain, from Dallas, Pennsylvania.

After Franklin (8-0 overall) was no-hit through the first three innings, failed to score at one point in a bases-loaded, no outs situation and fell behind 3-0, starting pitcher Ian Haynes led off the fourth inning with a double.  With one out, Eli Dickson singled Haynes home and advanced to second base on an error.  Tony Stewart then doubled home Dickson, and Marc Knox and Zach Taylor reached base on two-out walks.  Shortstop Tyus Wood then provided what would turn out to be the game-winning hit, a two-run double.

Franklin’s infield would bail out their pitchers with double plays in both of the final two innings, and the game finished just moments before a torrential downpour would postpone the final game of the day.  Noah White earned the win in relief of Haynes, but Haynes would return to the mound to register the game’s final four outs and pick up the save.

KAU scored twice in the first inning on a two-run double by left fielder John Vogel, and would add a third run in the third frame on a pinch-hit single by Cory Burns.  Vogel allowed the deciding hit by Wood, but all of the runs scored by Franklin were charged to KAU starter Louis Sharp.
