A former employee of a local steel company has entered a guilty plea in Venango County Court in a case in which he was accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of metal from his one-time employer’s work sites last winter.
In exchange for a plea of guilty to a charge of theft by unlawful taking, counts of receiving stolen property and criminal mischief against 25 year-old Michael Morrison were dismissed.
Morrison stood accused of removing nearly $200,000 worth of steel from properties of Latrobe Specialty Steel, and attempting to sell it for scrap in at least three locations.
State Police say they found Morrison sleeping in his van at a Latrobe property on DeBence Drive in Sandycreek Township early on the morning of January 25. Troopers report they found steel products in the vehicle. Morrison was later accused of selling, or attempting to sell stolen steel at locations in Oil City, Meadville and Slippery Rock.
