Fracking Operations To Meet Standards Of Independent Review

Officials of the energy industry and environmentalists announced Wednesday the creation of an agency that will serve as an independent review center to ensure that oil and gas companies meet stringent standards in “fracking” operations utilized in the drilling for natural gas.

Based in the Pittsburgh area, the Center for Sustainable Shale Development would review steps taken by energy companies to protect the air and water from pollution.  Once given the center’s stamp of approval, organizers hope the cooperating companies’ efforts will be accepted by the public as satisfactory, much as consumers trust the Underwriters Laboratories’ “UL” seal on electrical products.

It is hoped that the effort will prevent battles over fracking at the state Capitol and on the local level, and help drilling expansion become more acceptable in the minds of local residents.
