Major League Baseball’s 109th World Series, the fourth match-up between the Boston Red Sox and the St. Louis Cardinals, begins Wednesday night at Fenway Park in Boston.
Boston’s Jon Lester (15-8) is scheduled to face the Cardinals’ Cy Young Award candidate Adam Wainwright (19-9). The pessimistic weather forecast calls for a 40 percent chance of rain and temperatures in the 40’s.
For the first time in a decade, the Fall Classic will match the teams with the Majors’ best records. Both Boston and St. Louis posted regular season records of 97-65.
The teams also met in 1946 and 1967, with the Cardinals winning both times. Boston snapped an 86-year World Series winless streak with a win over St. Louis in 2004, and will now be looking for their third title in ten years.
Should the Series go a full seven games and not face weather problems, a champion will be determined October 31.
