Former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge remains in a Texas hospital following an emergency heart procedure performed on Thursday.

Doctors are now saying the 72 year-old Ridge had suffered a heart attack sometime before he requested assistance from a hotel staff, and was then rushed to a local hospital.  He underwent a surgical procedure Thursday at Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas, and was listed over the weekend in critical but stable condition.

Ridge was visiting Texas for a conference of the Republican Governors Association in Austin.

Ridge served as Pennsylvania’s governor from 1995 until 2001 before being chosen by President George W. Bush to become the nation’s first Homeland Security Director following the 9-11 attacks in 2001.

He had previously served six terms in Congress, representing the Erie area.
