State health officials say flu season appears to be “in full swing” throughout at least half of Pennsylvania.

Hardest-hit areas, so far, appear to be Allegheny and Blair Counties, but numerous cases are also being treated here in the Oil Region.

The state Health Department is saying nearly 1,200 cases were confirmed in Pennsylvania between September 29 and December 21, and January and February are normally the worst months for the bug.

Nationwide, according to the Centers For Disease Control, more than 380,000 flu victims ended up in hospitals last year, the highest total since 2005.
