Fire Destroys Meadville Salvation Army Food And Toy Donations

December 15, 2017
By

A fire early Thursday morning destroyed the holiday food and toy donations being stored at the Salvation Army’s Meadville headquarters.

The blaze is estimated to have caused as much as $16,000 in damages, including $10,000 to the building, about $2,000 worth of food and as much as $4,000 in donated toys.  Reports indicate the agency planned to service some 200 families with the donated items.

Firefighters were called to the Park Avenue address around 7:00 AM Thursday when two Salvation Army captains opened the facility and found it to be full of smoke.

Most of the fire itself was confined to a room containing a refrigerator and three freezers.  Many of the toys were damaged by smoke and soot.  Fire officials believe the blaze began in the refrigerator.

Salvation Army volunteers are expected to set up a trailer and tents on Friday to accept donations of toys, as well as monetary gifts.
