The residents of two apartments were left homeless, and damages are estimated at $75,000 following a fire which destroyed a two-story duplex in downtown Franklin on Monday afternoon.

The building on the 10-hundred block of Liberty Street near Washington Crossing was declared a total loss.  No injuries were reported.

Franklin and Rocky Grove firefighters were summoned to the duplex shortly before 4:15 PM Monday.  Some remained on the scene for about five-and-a-half hours.

The building was owned by Michael Haggerty.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the blaze may have begun in the kitchen of one of the duplex apartments.
