A crash involving a tractor-trailer, and an ensuing fire forced another detour of eastbound traffic on Interstate 80 in northern Clarion County and southern Venango County on Sunday.
State Police from the Clarion station say a rig driven by 53 year-old Edward Kessler, from Michigan, traveled off the left side of the highway, sideswiped nearly 170 feet of guardrail, and crashed in the median, starting a fire which destroyed the entire cab. Kessler was not injured.
As a traffic backup resulted, motorists exiting at Knox found themselves tied up in traffic on Routes 208, 322 or 338, further complicating problems. Officials were forced to detour traffic further west at Barkeyville. The eastbound lanes of I-80 between the Knox and Shippenville exits were closed from between 4:00 PM Sunday and 1:00 AM Monday.
Then, just as traffic was flowing again, a multiple-vehicle crash was reported on Interstate 80 westbound between the Strattanville and New Bethlehem/Clarion exits. Traffic headed west was detoured for nearly an hour-and-a-half. Details on that accident have still not been released.
