Emerson Wins 6th PIAA Medal; Franklin Places Fifth At State Swim Meet

Franklin High school senior Phil Emerson won the 100-freestyle for the third consecutive year at the PIAA “AA” Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University on Saturday, winning the finals heat in a time of 45.65.

Emerson’s two gold medal victories over the weekend helped boost the Knights to a fifth-place finish, marking the fifth consecutive year that Franklin has finished in the top five at the state meet.  Emerson closed his high school career with six gold medals at PIAA state events, including his second straight title in the 50 freestyle, won on Friday.

Other Franklin swimmers who competed Saturday included Connor Virgile, who place 27th in the 100 backstroke, and Katelyn Steigerwald, who represented the Lady Knights with a 28th-place finish in the 100 freestyle.

Mars won the boys’ team title, and Villa Maria Academy from Malvern was the girls’ winner.

A District 10 swimmer was named the boys “AA” Swimmer-of-the-Meet.  Corry High School’s Brent Benedict set a state record of 48.69 in winning the 100 backstroke.  Benedict won gold in the 100 butterfly on Friday.
