Carl Edwards won a NASCAR Sprint Cup race held on a road course for the first time Sunday, taking the checkered flag at the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in California.

Edwards grabbed the lead on a restart with 25 laps remaining, and held off Jeff Gordon at the finish.  It was his second series win of the season, and the 23rd of his career.  The victory ended a string of five straight races for Hendrick Motorsports, although Hendrick’s four drivers all finished in the top seven.  The win was also number 135 for Edwards’ car owner, Jack Roush of Roush Fenway Racing.

Next week, racers will be in Watkins Glen, New York for the Six Hours of the Glen event.
