While the Pennsylvania Governor’s office has been notified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that the Healthy PA plan has met the requirements for a complete application, the plan that reforms Medicaid and offers a private option for extended coverage received another airing this week in a House budget hearing.
Radio PA News reports the Secretary of the state Department of Public Welfare, Beverly Mackereth, fielded questions about why the state did not simply expand Medicaid, or why officials did not opt in to expansion while seeking the waiver for the plan.
Mackereth said it is not as simple as flipping a switch and covering thousands of people. She added that reform is a key.
Mackereth said the negotiations period is underway, and asserted that the federal government is not going to just throw out the state’s plan.
