Corbett Signs Bill Limiting Abortion Coverage Under Federal Health Care

Governor Tom Corbett on Monday signed into law a bill that would limit coverage of abortions in Pennsylvania under the federal health care provisions which are scheduled to take effect next year.

Supporters, including bill sponsor Representative Donna Oberlander, from Clarion County, say Pennsylvania has long prohibited taxpayer-funded elective abortions.

Critics say the law expands restrictions on abortion rights and discriminates against poor women.

Corbett did not comment on the new law during its signing on Monday, but his administration has in the past stated it would not impose any greater restrictions on access to abortions than those that already exist.
