Governor Tom Corbett has ordered Pennsylvania flags to be lowered to half-staff until sunset Monday, December 9 out of respect to the memory of Nelson Mandela.

The former President of South Africa died Thursday at the age of 95.

Corbett issued a statement Thursday calling Mandela a “colossus of freedom,” and saying the world has lost a great statesman and a champion of liberty.

Mandela was jailed in South Africa for 27 years on charges derived from his fight against racism in his country.  He was released in 1990, having already becoming an iconic individual to supporters around the world.
