The man being sought by police in a murder in Cleveland that was posted on Facebook Live was found dead in a car in the Erie area late Tuesday morning.
Police say 37 year-old Steve Stephens shot himself. Stephens’ body was found in a car stopped by the State Police near a former elementary school in the area of the intersection of Buffalo Road and Downing Avenue in Wesleyville, east of the city of Erie.
State Police officials from the Erie station say a fast food restaurant employee alerted them that it was believed Stephens was at their establishment. Troopers say they followed Stephens for about a mile, headed west toward metropolitan Erie before they used an official maneuver to stop the vehicle.
That is when police say Stephens shot himself with a handgun.
Stephens had been accused in the shooting death of 74 year-old Robert Godwin, apparently at random. A Facebook video blamed Stephens’ outburst on a former girlfriend.
Stephens’ cellphone signal had been picked up in Erie on Sunday, and that was when law enforcement officers in the Erie area were alerted to be looking for the Cleveland suspect.
