Clarion University Holds Forums On School’s Workforce Plan

Clarion University is holding a number of open forums this Tuesday and Wednesday (Aug. 27 and 28) to help explain the school’s new workforce plan, unveiled a week-and-a-half ago in an involved 32-page report.

The restructuring plan, meant to avoid the inflation of the school’s deficit to an estimated $12 million, revealed the possibility of the layoffs of as many as 40 employees, including up to 22 faculty members, and the elimination  of up to 14 other positions through attrition.  It also appeared that the plan would eliminate Clarion’s Music Education program, German and French, and the Department of Academic Enrichment, and make cuts in several other programs, in addition to closing the school’s Art Gallery.

In recent days, some school officials have attempted to reinterpret the contents of the report, hinting that the layoff numbers may be lower and the department cuts may be less severe.

The forums regarding the workforce plan are scheduled for 5:00 pm Tuesday, and 7:30 AM and 2:30 PM Wednesday at Clarion’s Hart Chapel.  Feedback and comments may also be e-mailed to school president Karen Whitney at president@clarion.edu
