The Pittsburgh Pirates (3-6) ended a 6-game preseason losing streak on Sunday afternoon with an 8-6 victory over the Houston Astros at McKechnie Field in Bradenton, Florida.
Tony Sanchez tripled and drove in two runs, and Neil Walker contributed two hits and an RBI.
On Saturday, a split squad of Detroit Tigers players posted a 4-1 decision over the Bucs, extending the Pittsburgh losing string.
Friday, the Pirates split their team and lost 6-5 to Baltimore and 5-2 to Boston. In the Orioles contest, Pittsburgh’s Gaby Sanchez homered twice, and teammate Travis Snider tallied three hits. The Bucs outhit Baltimore 14-11, but the Orioles slammed four homers. Against the Red Sox, Pirates starter Jeff Locke allowed three runs on four hits and three walks through three innings.
On Monday afternoon, the Bucs will host Philadelphia (4-5), and on Tuesday they will play Team Spain, one of the competitors in the ongoing World Baseball Classic.
