A four-run seventh inning, started by a two-out throwing error by Gaby Sanchez, playing at third base, led the Tampa Bay Rays to a 4-2 preseason victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates (4-8) in Bradenton, Florida on Thursday afternoon.
One of the four unearned runs scored on the error, a second came home on a single by the Rays’ Mike Fontenot, and two more were recorded on a double by Tim Beckham.
The Pirates were held scoreless on just two hits until the ninth inning when Matt Hague singled, Jared Goedert walked, and Russell Martin drove both runners home with a double. Jeanmar Gomez, in a middle relief role, was the hard-luck loser.
Pittsburgh will play the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night.
