The Pittsburgh Pirates followed a 3-2 preseason win over the Houston Astros on Friday night with back-to-back losses to Minnesota and the New York Yankees over the weekend.
The Bucs enter the final two weeks of Grapefruit League play with a 9-13 record, having lost three of their last four contests.
In Friday’s Pirates win, Garrett Jones, Travis Snider and Jordy Mercer all drove home runs, and starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez earned the win with three innings of scoreless, 1-hit, three strikeout pitching.
The Bucs managed only four hits Saturday in a 2-1 defeat by the Twins, Gaby Sanchez provided the lone Pittsburgh run with a sacrifice fly.
Sunday, the New York Yankees scored six runs on seven hits and two walks in 2-and-a-third innings off Pittsburgh starter Phil Irwin, and jumped to an 8-0 lead before holding on for an 11-9 win. The Bucs outhit the Yankees 12-10 with Starling Marte and Pedro Alvarez provided two hits apiece, and Clint Barmes slamming his second home run of the spring.
The Pirates will face the Boston Red Sox (9-11) on Monday afternoon in Bradenton.
