Liriano, who has now won all three of his starts for Pittsburgh, allowed only two hits over seven innings.  He struck out nine batters and walked only one. Watson and Melancon both surrendered one hit in one inning.  Melancon earned his first save.

Wellington Castillo provided two of the four Chicago hits.  Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija (2-6; 3.25 ERA) lost a 1-0 decision for the second time in a month, while the Pirates won their second 1-0 contest in five days.

Pittsburgh will complete a ten-game homestand at 12:35 PM on Thursday afternoon, looking to complete a three-game sweep over Chicago.  The Pirates are expected to start Jeanmar Gomez (2-0; 2.78 ERA) against the Cubs’ Edwin Jackson (1-6; 5.76 ERA).
