Boston Deals Lester, Gomes To Oakland For Yoenis Cespedes; Other Deadline Day Trades

August 1, 2014

The Boston Red Sox on Thursday traded pitcher Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes to the Oakland Athletics for slugger Yoenis Cespedes.

A source told’s Gordon Edes that Boston will also receive Oakland’s “competitive balance draft pick.”

The 30 year-old Lester is 10-7 with a 2.52 ERA.  The Red Sox won two World Series titles with Lester as the ace in their starting pitching rotation.  He will become a free agent following the end of this season after he turned down Boston’s four-year, $70 million offer during the offseason.

Lester joins an Oakland pitching staff that recently acquired starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Chicago Cubs, and had already included Scott Kazmir and Sonny Gray.

Gomes is hitting .234 this year with six home runs and 32 RBI’s.

Cespedes, famed as the two-time reigning Home Run Derby champion, has 17 homers and 56 RBI’s this season.

Boston was far from done dealing on the deadline day for non-waiver trades.  They also sent pitchers John Lackey and Corey Littrell to St. Louis for first baseman/outfielder Allen Craig and pitcher Joe Kelly.  Boston dealt shortstop Stephen Drew to the New York Yankees for infielder Kelly Johnson.  And, in a swap of left-handed pitchers, the Red Sox sent Andrew Miller to Baltimore for Eduardo Rodriguez.

The Cardinals also acquired pitcher Justin Masterson from Cleveland for outfielder James Ramsey.

The Tampa Bay Rays traded pitcher David Price to Detroit in a three-team deal that also involved Seattle.  The Tigers sent pitcher Drew Smyly and infielder Willy Adames to Tampa Bay and outfielder Austin Jackson to Seattle.  The Mariners shipped infielder Nick Franklin to Tampa Bay.

The Chicago Cubs traded utilityman Emilio Bonifacio and pitcher James Russell to Atlanta for catcher Victor Caratini.

In the largest deal of the day, Houston traded pitcher Jarred Cosart, utilityman Kiki Hernandez and outfielder Austin Wates to Miami for third baseman Colin Moran, outfielder Jake Marisnick, pitcher Francis Martes and a 2015 compensatory draft pick.

And, Oakland sent pitcher Tommy Milone to Minnesota for outfielder Sam Fuld, who had been with the Athletics at the beginning of this season until he was claimed by the Twins on the waiver line.

The Arizona Diamondbacks dealt outfielder Gerardo Parra to Milwaukee for outfielder Mitch Haniger and pitcher Anthony Banda.  Arizona also sent infielder Martin Prado to the Yankees for catcher Pete O’Brien and future considerations.
