The body of a Mercer County man who had been missing since his canoe capsized last Wednesday has been found by a group of friends who continued looking for the man after an official search had been ended.

The body of 47 year-old Eric Metz, from Transfer, was discovered in about eight feet of water an estimated 100 yards from where Metz went into the Shenango River.  Metz went under shortly before dusk last Wednesday near New Hamburg.  He apparently was able to make sure that his daughter and his ex-wife who had been in the canoe with him made it safely to shore, but Metz could not make it back himself.

An autopsy is being conducted in Erie.
