Each winter, frozen pipes cost homeowners and their insurance companies plenty of money.

Believe it or not, reports indicate that the average homeowner’s claim for freezing and water damage comes to nearly $6,000.

Rosanne Placey, of the State Insurance Department, tells Radio PA News approximately twenty percent of home insurance losses are related to frozen water.  Among her suggestions are to know where your pipes are located and how to insulate them, check your pipes each year, maintain a constant year-round temperature in your home, and seal cracks and holes on your outside walls and even on the floors of the basement and, if it is attached, your garage.

Placey also suggests you call a professional to remedy frozen pipe problems, and not try to fix them yourself.
