Unemployment remained at a 7.7 percent level in Venango County in August, but climbed in surrounding counties, mirroring an increase in joblessness around Pennsylvania in the month.

As a matter of fact, 53 of the state’s 67 counties saw unemployment rise in August, exactly the reverse of the month of July.  Statewide unemployment rose from 7.5 percent in July to 7.7 percent.  The national figure for August was 7.3 percent, down one-tenth of a percentage point.

Other jobless numbers for August in and around the Oil Region included an 8.3 percent rate in Clarion County, up from 8.2 percent; 7.3 percent in Crawford County, up from 7.2 percent; 11 percent (up from 9.6 percent) in Forest County, but only 6.6 percent in Warren County (up from 6.3 percent), and 8.5 percent in Mercer County, all the way up from 7.6 percent in July.
